The Australian GT Championship will feature on the support bill for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix next season, according to Tony Quinn.
The championship is expected to host one of its six 2016 sprint rounds at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit over the March 31-April 3 weekend.
Returning to the event for the first time since 2010, Speedcafe.com understands the championship will contest 4×30 minute races.
Championship owner Quinn is due to meet with the Australian Grand Prix Corporation next week to finalise the arrangement.
“It is a done deal,” Quinn told Speedcafe.com.
“I’m very appreciative to the guys at the grand prix for accommodating us with that if we didn’t get that (4×30 minute races) it was going to be difficult to distribute the points for the championship.
“We will have to ado a good job for them (Australian Grand Prix Corporation).
“I’m humbled by the enthusiasm that everyone is showing Australian GT and the opportunity we have been given.”
The calendars for both the AGT sprint and endurance series are edging closer to completion with schedules expected to be confirmed around the penultimate round at Sandown next week.
It is understood a visit to Perth’s Barbagallo Raceway alongside V8 Supercars will feature on the sprint series schedule, expected to begin at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.
Quinn had been keen to add the Bathurst 12 Hour to his endurance series calendar but it looks unlikely to come to fruition for next season.
Australian GT hosted a championship round at the Mount Panorama endurance classic in 2013 when the first hour of the race was eligible for points.
“We will support it (Bathurst 12 Hour) 100 percent but for it to join our championship, its difficult,” added Quinn.
“I’m pretty sure that it is too difficult to be on for next year but that is not going to stop our guys from doing it (the event).
“If we have a year to work it out for the next one a solution may be added, I had no problem with what we did in 2013.”
